On August 3, 2022, the English Literature Study Program of FBS UNY held a general lecture entitled Level Up Series #3: Crafting YOUR Path to Success. Three experts in the field of entrepreneurship were present, 1) Dr. Kurniawan, M. Hum, founder of Kurnia English Course, BASOSBUD, children's hypnotherapy, Five V beauty soap, Kampung Inggris Solo, Kiddos Speak, HM Management, and Rumah Parenting. 2) Desideria Cempaka Murti, Ph. D., an academic entrepreneur who is also the Director of Development and co-founder of Travelxism, and 3) Nova Suparmanto, M. Sc., a technopreneur and the founder of CV Astoetik Indonesia, PPTI Yogyakarta, and PT PMCT.
The activity held through Zoom meeting was attended by 237 participants who were lecturers and students of English Literature study program. The event which lasted for more than three hours was hosted by Dr. Andy Bayu Nugroho, M. Hum.
In the first session, Dr. Kurniawan said that mastering a language, especially English, is a business opportunity. Then he explained some reasons for becoming an entrepreneur, such as having time freedom at work, having a large income, having full control over the business, creating jobs, and applying creative ideas. He also explained that things that make people delay to become entrepreneurs are having no experience, seeing other people's failures, not having capital, feeling unable, having no motivation, and not having a strategic place to run a business. He further explained that these things should not be a barrier to starting a business, especially for English Literature students because language is a business opportunity.
In the second session, Desideria Cempaka Wijaya Murti, Ph. D started her presentation motivating the students. Desi said they are Indonesia’s golden generation in a strategic age range. Other countries with less population at strategic age, such as Japan, China, and America, will need them. So, this is a great opportunity for Indonesia's golden generation to work there or to have clients from these countries. In addition, in today's rapidly changing world, they must prepare and think to work in fields that were never thought of before, such as being trash designers, death entrepreneurs and consultants, space guides, and memory managers of the dead. She further stated that in facing this fast-paced changing era, there are five soft skills that are really needed: creativity, persuasion, collaboration, adaptability, and emotional intelligence. The tips she gave for students who want to become entrepreneurs are that they must become problem solvers as well as creators and create personal brands.
