Workshop: Picture Books through Theater with Paula Hoffman

As part of the “Teaching Diversity—Diversity in Teaching” project funded by the DAAD, networking workshops continue to take place. One of the workshops was Workshop Picture Books through Theater, which also collaborated with the Centre for Children’s Literature and Literacy Education (CCLLE) at UNY. Paula Hoffman from the University of Münster became the main speaker for this workshop. The workshop took place in WS Rendra (GK 1), third-floor room 311, and was conducted on May 20, 2024, from 15:00 to 17:00 Western Indonesia Time.

The main events of this workshop were the presentation, group and picture book discussions, and group work performances. Forty-five fourth-semester students of the Children’s Literature class learned the fundamental necessity of using diversity-oriented picture books in schools and educational institutions, as well as the didactic implementation of problem-oriented picture books in school classes. Through a 30-minute group work session, the students were divided into five groups. Each group was assigned to stage individual excerpts from the picture books Mommy’s Khimar by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow, Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, The Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña, Come Away from the Water, Shirley by John Burningham, and The Smartest Giant in Town by Julia Donaldson.

The presentation then continued with feedback and reflection. In general, the workshop received positive responses from the participants. Not only ensure a high level of participation during the workshop, but the methodology of scenic play and creative experiment will hopefully encourage the students in the future to use creative methods in a school context.
