Supporting SDGs 5, UNY English Literature Students Hold Gender Equality Education Socialization

YOGYAKARTA – A group of three students from the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Language, Arts, and Culture, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) successfully held a socialization activity titled "Gender Equality Education for Students as an Effort to Support the Achievement of SDGs 5 (Gender Equality)". The socialization event, held on June 2, 2026, was conducted to fulfill the final assignment (UAS) for the Education and Sustainable Development course, supervised by Dr. Fitta Ummaya Santi M.Pd.

Eradicating Stereotypes in the Campus Environment
The initiative for this project stemmed from the group's observations of social phenomena and educational environments that are still characterized by gender stereotypes. Common examples include the assumption that men are more suited to be leaders while women should only handle domestic/kitchen matters, as well as casual remarks that underestimate a specific gender. These conditions indicate a lack of understanding regarding gender equality, which can potentially trigger discrimination and limit an individual's opportunity to grow. Therefore, this socialization aimed to educate students so they can collectively build an inclusive and respectful campus environment.

This educational project directly focuses on two main objectives:

  • SDGs 5 (Gender Equality): As the primary target to raise awareness about equal rights and opportunities, as well as to promote anti-gender discrimination attitudes on campus.
  • SDGs 4 (Quality Education): As the foundation for the educational method, where the material is delivered through interactive presentations to ensure the process is not only informative but also transformative in shaping the participants' values and attitudes.

Team Collaboration and Roles
The socialization activity ran smoothly thanks to a structured division of tasks among the group members. The breakdown of each member's role is as follows:

  • Nadia Naila Husna and Wirdatul Imdad acted as the main speakers who delivered the core concepts of gender equality to the participants.
  • Devinta Siswi Handari and Jeny Tri Mutia were responsible for gathering educational materials, evaluating the project's impact, and also serving as speakers.
  • Afifah Auni Fatin took on the role of sourcing material while ensuring the event was well recorded alongside the documentation team.
  • Shafina Chaerani Putri focused on documentation and publication, which included uploading the output of the socialization activity to YouTube.

Results, Evaluation, and Sustainability Plan
Based on the post-event evaluation, the socialization received highly positive feedback. A number of participants showed great enthusiasm and actively participated during the presentation and the Q&A sessions. The increase in students' understanding of gender equality issues was clearly visible and measurable through the interactive discussions during those sessions.

Nevertheless, the group noted several points that need evaluation for future activities. One of them was the distribution of invitations via broadcast messages (BC), which was considered too short-notice. This affected the attendance rate, and the group notes that participant turnout needs to be increased for future events.

As a sustainability plan, the prepared educational materials are expected to be reused as a learning module for similar activities in the future. Furthermore, this activity is hoped to encourage students to consistently apply gender equality values in their daily interactions, ultimately creating an academic environment free from discrimination.
