A guest Lecture on Children's Literature with Dr. Laura Apol from MSU, US

FBS, Karangmalang On Tuesday, November 12th the English Literature Program held a poetry workshop under the coordination of Mrs. Susana Widyastuti, Ph.D., Head of the English Literature Program with guest lecturer Professor Laura Apol Ph.D. from Michigan State University. Professor Laura Apol was welcomed by the students and lecturers of the English Literature Department to discuss her workshop titled “Lost Earrings, Swans, Avocados and Borobudur”.

She then explained one of poetry's important elements, Imagery. In poetry, Imagery means using figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. It continued by discussing the imagery that comes to mind as the students read her poems: The lives of others, surrender, six a.m, and November Rain. She explained that applying this element can help add a deeper sense to the poetry.

The students were fascinated. They responded to the discussion with enthusiasm. Sonia, a student from the English Literature Department, said that the lecture was extremely fascinating and eye-opening. "Laura Apol's work adds a different view to the things we regard as mundane and this is to show the art of literature. After this, I'm sure lots of the students will become more engaged in literature, the same way I feel during the lecture." The workshop was then closed with a group photo commemorating the moment.
