Indonesian Varsity Debating Team World’s Contest.

Debating Teams from Indonesia participated in the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) at The Hague, Netherlands from the 27th December 2016 – 4th January 2017. With close to 400 teams participating, it is the largest, most prestigious debating tournament and also the biggest student - run event in the world. The World Universities Debating Championships use the British parliamentary format. Topics are announced 15 minutes before the debate begins and the rounds are contested by four teams: two supporting the proposition (Government) and two opposing (Opposition).

Four Best teams from Indonesia (UI, UGM, Binus, UB) were granted to WUDC by The Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education. They were crowned as the national delegates after successfully reach top four position in the National Universities Debating Championship. Other varsity debating teams from IPB, UNY, UNPAD joined WUDC as non-state delegates.

Rachmat Nurcahyo, M.A., a lecturer of Yogyakarta State University, acted as the Team Manager of Indonesian delegates. He stated that hard work and dedication are they key for debaters. “Indonesia have been working hard to improve our standing on the global level.”

Al Indonesian teams debated in nine preliminary rounds and single-elimination rounds. All state delegates debated broke to non-EPL eliminations. In terms of individual rankings, published after the preliminary rounds, Taufiq and Cara (UI) were awarded best ESL speakers.
