One of the students from English Literature class of 2018, Annisa Arwien Rizada, joined Intercultural Leadership Program organized by Indonesian Young Leaders Expedition (IYLE). The program was held for 4 days January 15-18th 2020, in the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi. IYLE Intercultural Leaders is a program to unite young leaders from various backgrounds to enhance their diverse skill-sets, build strong connections, and promote social awareness, peace as well as understanding the different values and cultures. The goals of this program is to create opportunities for young people to enhance their leadership skills by giving them challenging intercultural environment and cultures through activities that cultivating teamwork, social awareness, and a sense of unity among young leaders. IYLE expects all delegates can make an impact in their homes, communities, among their peers and, most importantly, within themselves by leaving with a better knowledge from this program.

Annisa’s activities for 4 days in Hanoi were very brief, dense, and meaningful. The first activity on January 15th, 2020, were opening session, group division, and group discussion. The second day of activities on January 16th, 2020, were a visit to the Indonesian embassy in Hanoi and the social expedition program to one of the Buddhist Temple named Chùa Thượng Yên. The activity on the third day on January 17th, 2020, was the Hanoi Survival Challenge where delegates (in a group) explored Hanoi City in a different way with several challenges given such as limited hints about the destinations, limited money, and no GPS/phone. The night after the survival challenge, the delegates' activities were dinner, performance night, and awarding time. On the peak night, Annisa and her group managed to win an award, the best group award. Finally, the reward on the last day was Hanoi city trip where delegates visited tourist attractions in Hanoi such as the Temple of literature, Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, etc.

According to Annisa, this program provided several benefits. First, through this program, she experienced a brand new culture because there are many differences between Indonesia and Vietnam in tradition, culture, language, beliefs, weather, and so on. Second, through this program, she is able to boost her knowledge and insights from other great delegates, sharpen her courage in expressing opinions and making decisions. Third, she is able to broaden her connection with the Indonesian delegates from various Indonesian universities and also added new networks and new friends from Vietnam, especially students of Hanoi University. Fourth, she could get out of her comfort zones, increase her self-confidence, improve her social awareness, and develop her knowledge of diversity by learning from Vietnamese culture. (AARiz)
