Being Local Volunteer in Handvironment 4.0 AIESEC UPNVY 2019

One of the students from the English Literature Study Program, Nurul Aulia Devi, became a local volunteer in Handvironment 4.0 AIESEC UPNVY. She is volunteered for about 6 weeks and got a lot of benefits by doing the project. The project took place in Sudagaran village, Tegalrejo, Yogyakarta.

Handvironment project is one of the summer projects by AIESEC in UPNVY. This project-based on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by United Nations number 12 which is Responsible Consumption and Productions. This project invites the home industry to manage their waste by using three steps which are reduced, reuse, and recycle. Meanwhile became a buddy to exchange participants from different countries, Devi was involved in the project activities such as making tofu waste into pesticides and crackers, recycle patchwork into handcrafts, being a translator in school roadshow, and campaign. As a local volunteer, Devi has several responsibilities such as give a company and befriends with exchange participants, help them to adapt to Yogyakarta, and introduce Yogyakarta’s culture and customs. By doing this project, Devi killed two birds with one stone. She could raise her awareness in the environment and practices the English language. She could meet a lot of people from different backgrounds and countries. This is a great opportunity to learn and appreciate the differences.

“My impression of being a local volunteer in Handvironment 4.0 UPNVY AIESEC is beyond my expectation. I learned how to speak up in front of hundreds of people as being a translator. Not only practicing the English language but I also learned leadership skills. The atmosphere was very different from other organizations because I feel AIESEC people are very tolerant of differences and non-judgmental. This project helps me to change my daily life of using plastic. I wasn’t aware but then this project helps me to change from a simple habit such as choose stainless straw instead of a plastic straw. I’ve got a bunch of international friends and we still catch up until now.” (NuDev)
